Old Seafarer - fix or scrap ? Hi,I am looking at buying a boat which is fitted with an older Seafarer echosounder than I have seen before (grey case). The owner said it didn't work, but when I clicked the on- switch the display lit up and started whirling, which was apparently more than it had ever done for him ! The boat is high & dry so is there any way I can make further tests before it goes back in the water ? All I can think of is to remove the transducer from the hull (where it has been since the '7. I could take the whole lot to a lake.

However, I suspect that I might well damage the transducer in the process, and never know if it worked anyway. Options seem to be: a) Leave old transducer in place as a bung for existing hole, buy new echosounder & fit new transducer elsewhereb) Explore possibility that new transducer can still be got for the Seafarer, if required (will it fit the old hole ?)I'd appreciate any experience others have in this field.

Assuming I buy the boat I will have a prime opportunity to fit new equipment between Xmas and launch in the Spring. I do consider this instrument to be vital, so if going for a new installation what comments on through- hull vs in- hull mounting ? And is this a DIY or a boatyard job ?
